Dialysis technicians oversee and run the dialysis equipment that eliminates waste and excess fluid from the blood of patients whose kidneys are failing. Along with prepping patients and overseeing treatments, dialysis technicians also write post-treatment reports. They also work on staff and patient training materials and equipment evaluation processes. A doctor or nurse usually oversees the work of dialysis technicians at a hospital, clinic, or home-dialysis program. Dialysis technicians work under the supervision of nurses and doctors on several other activities, including recording patient information and taking vital signs before to, during, and following dialysis. Because they interact with blood, dialysis technicians need to be aware of safety procedures and how to prevent HIV and hepatitis.
